The Advanced Guide to Natural Link Building Techniques

We are now in 2014 and things have changed for the better and so do the Google. Backlinks are still one of the vital element in skyrocketing search engine rankings. However it can also harm your rankings if you build them blindly and without a proper plan. So in this advanced guide I want to provide you with important information that will help you in generating natural and stable backlinks. It is important to get natural and stable backlinks because that is how you are going to survive in the future and stay on top of your competitors.

Before I start let me first talk a little about the past so that you can understand why it is very important not to generate backlinks blindly.

Google is one of the most used search engine on internet with more then three billion searches every day. As a blogger it is very important to stay away from the techniques that are against the Google Terms of Use. If you violates the rules you are not going to get free traffic from the Google.

And since Google is a giant search engine you as a blogger can get millions of readers to your blog without any money investment. Google always change the rules to ensure that only the best results are shown to the users and that is how it is going to stay as the best search engine. If as a user you find spam and irrelevant results in Google then you probably will not use it next time. This is the main reason Google keep the rules tight so that users get the most relevant and useful result.

From 2009 onwards Google has changed the rules (algorithm) which has started to cause changes in the search result pages. The update was known as Venic Update. With this update big brands started to outrank the small brands.

In 2011 Google released another update known as Google Panda which started to decrease the ranking of the blogs, websites and pages with duplicate and low quality content.

In April 2012 Google introduced Google Penguin which started to penalize the blogs and websites which where using aggressive techniques to build backlinks with over-optimized anchor texts. With this update the rules were changed and now as a blogger you need to keep certain things in mind when creating backlinks. [Will be discussed later]

In September 2013 Google introduced EMD update which started to target blogs and websites that were using low quality content and over-optimized anchor texts with branded domains.

There were several updates made by Google in the past few years and it will be time consuming to discuss all of them here. However Moz.com has a detailed section about all the Google Algorithm Updates where you can find all the information. I suggest you to go through it so that you can get an idea of what has been changed since then.

Although you don’t need to remember every thing about the updates but going through the past updates will help you to stay on the right direction and work on the right things in future.

Now that you are familiar with the past lets discuss the important things you need to keep in mind when creating backlinks.

Anchor Text Distribution

As you already know the clickable part of a link or hyperlink is known as Anchor Text. You need to use different anchor text for your links so that you can stay safe from any future Google updates. For example if you want to rank for the keyword “Xbox Gaming” then the following are the Anchor Texts you can use when creating backlinks.

  • yourdomain.com
  • checkout xbox games here
  • for more information about xbox games
  • xbox gaming blog
  • gaming blog about xbox
  • the xbox gaming blog

Although you want to get rank for the keyword “Xbox Gaming” but using different anchor text for the backlinks will ensure that you are not caught by the Google Penguin Update. You will still rank for your targeted keyword even if you have used different other anchor texts for the links.

So keep this in mind that the anchor text distribution is very important and if you want to future secure your rankings then you must not use the same anchor text again and again.

Use your anchor text based on the following criteria.

  • Brand Name :- Use your brand name as a anchor text for your backlinks. e.g Mustajaab
  • URL:- Use your blog URL as a anchor text. e.g www.yourdomain.com OR yourdomain.com
  • Generic Keywords:- Use different keywords like “checkout”, “check here”, “visit this” with your main keywords to make your anchor text distribution look natural.
  • Use Keyphrases:- Use extra keywords with your main keywords to make it a keyphrase. For example the best xbox gaming blog OR read more about the xbox blog here etc…

In this way your backlink will look natural and you will not get penalized by any Google future updates. Let me repeat again, do not use the same anchor text again and again. It will not improve your ranking but can actually harm your blog ranking so keep this in mind.

Link Profile

Now that you are aware of the correct use of Anchor Text the next important thing is to create a clean and natural link profile. As discussed previously, Link Profile means the total number of backlinks acquired form different sources. For example backlinks from guest posting, blog commenting, article submission, video submission, internal links etc.

If your link profile contains only backlinks from Guest Blogging then this is not a natural link profile. It is not guaranteed to keep your search engine rankings high in the future. Because you are relying on a single source and who knows if Google decide to completely ignore the backlinks generated through the Guest Blogging.

So always generate backlinks using different sources. Keep your Link Profile varied and never use all your efforts on one type of backlinks. This will ensure that your link profle stays natural and future proof.

Sitewide Link Distribution

In order to keep your blog safe from future updates you need to generate backlinks not only for the home page but also for the other pages. In blogging your focused should be more on generating backlinks for your articles. You should not create backlinks only for the home page. As it may seem unnatural to Google and can be caught by Google Penguin which ultimately can reduce your your blog ranking.

It is advised to keep the ratio between the home page and internal page backlinks to 40:60

For example if you are about to create 100 backlinks then create 40 of the backlinks for your internal pages and remaining 60 for the Home Page. In other words try to keep the ratio of your Home Page backlinks to 60% and do not increase it. The more backlinks you get to your internal pages the more secure and natural your link profile will become.

Thanks to Neil Patel for providing a favorable Sitewide Link Distribution ratio.

Link Relevancy

The last important thing you must know when creating backlink is the relevancy. For example if your blog is about Xbox Gaming and you are trying to get a backlink from Health and Fitness Tips blogs then this is not a relevant link. Any link received from a irrelevant blog or page will look unnatural to Google and can be caught by the Google Penguin.

So when creating backlinks you must take relevancy in mind. If the page you are about to get a backlink is not relevant to your page then it is better to skip it.

Co-Citations

Slowly and gradully the anchor text is loosing its importance and in future it will be co-citation which will play major role in ranking. Although links will still remain the most important factor but instead of using anchor texts you will need to use co-citation.

Co-Citations refers to the text surrounding your link. For example have a look on the below screenshot.

Co-Citations

As you can see there is a Branded Anchor Text and is surrounded by its targeted keyword. This will send a message to Google that QuickHaggle.com is trying to rank for the keyword “exchange services, skills, ebooks and produces”.

This is how Co-Citation works and future is all about getting links with Co-Citations. So keep this in mind and always use your important keywords near your links so that Google can rank you for it.

If in future you want to check the Anchor Text Distribution, Link Profile, and SiteWide Link Distribution ratio then here is a detailed article written by Neil Patel which will show you how to check all the ratios.

Now that you are familiar with the important things about backlinks. Lets discuss some of the advanced techniques for backlink creation.

1# Broken Link Building

Have you ever seen 404 page not found errors while surfing the web?

Here is a example;

404 Page Not Found

These are the pages that are no longer available on the web. However there could be websites and blogs that may have still linked to such pages. If you can find a broken link related to your blog or article then it is quite easy to find out all the blogs who have linked to the broken pages.

In this way you can request the website OR blog owner to replace the broken link with your article. However your article must match with the broken link. For example if you have found a broken link about “Top 10 High Graphics Xbox Games” and there are websites linking to it then you can contact them and can provide a link to your version of the article on the same topic.

Broken Link Finding is little time consuming but it is one of the natural ways to acquire the most high quality backlinks. In order to find broken links that are related to your blog topics, you will need to deploy some techniques. Lets discuss them one by one in details.

Method #1 – Locate Relevant Pages and Find Broken Links

It is quite difficult to find a broken link directly that is related to one of your article. However you can find one by going through all the pages that are related to your blog and then scan all their external links. In this way if there is any broken link on their pages you can grab it and can start sending emails to all those blogs who have linked to the broken page.

Step 1:- Use the following keywords in Google to find out related pages.

  • keyword + “related links”
  • keyword + “resources”
  • keyword + intitle:resources

Make sure to replace the keyword with your required keyword. For example Xbox Gaming.

Step 2:- Once you have a page with related links and resources you will need to scan all its external links to find a broken link. Go through all the pages one by one and scan all the external links. You can use a Google Chrome Extension Check My Link to scan the external links for broken links.

Note:- This extension is only for Google Chrome browser.

When you find a broken link on a page, grab the URL of the broken link and find out who else have linked to it. In order to find all the other sources who have linked to the broken page, you can use MajesticSEO.com

Step 3:- Enter the URL of the broken page in MajesticSEO.com. The result page will show you the total number of pages linking to the particular page. Although the free version will not allow you to view all the sources but you can upgrade your Plan to get more data.

Step 4:- Once you have grabbed all the sources, visit every page to make sure that the page is relevant to your blog or article. So that you can proceed to contact the blog owner for the replacement of the broken link with yours.

Step 5:- Send an email to the blog owner notifying him/her about the broken link you found on its pages and ask gently to replace it with yours. If your article has more value and information then I can’t see any reason why he/she might not replace it with a working link.

Note:- Broken links on a page can also decrease the ranking of the page in search engines. Thus when you find a broken link and report to the blogger, you are actually doing them a favor to update the article with working links. So don’t be hesitant to contact the blog owners about the broken links.

Method #2 – BrokenLinkIndex.com

BrokenLinks Database

There is a website by iAcquire which scans the whole internet for broken links. It contains a huge data base of pages with 404 errors. You can search the database using keywords related to your blog or pages and the website will display result for all the broken links related to your keyword.

Access the database here:- http://brokenlinkindex.com/

Method #3 – Scrap Domains

First find a blog related to the topic of your blog. Grab its Domain and enter in the BrokenLinkCheck.com website. This website will scan the whole domain and find all the broken links. You can then enter the broken link in the MajesticSEO.com to get all the sources linking to it.

This is how you can generate natural and high quality backlinks using the power of Broken Link Building.

2# The Moving Man Method

This method is discovered by Brian Dean the owner of Backlinko.com. Although it comes under the Broken Link Building technique but it is little different then the previous one. Instead of finding broken links of a existing domains you can instead find websites and blogs that have changed its name, moved to another domain OR completely shutdown their websites.

Once you have the name of the website you can easily contact all the bloggers and website owners who have given backlinks to the old domain. In this way you can help bloggers to update a broken link (not exactly a broken link but rather a outdated) with a working one.

Here is the procedure to websites that have moved to another domain or changed its name OR shutdown completely.

Method 1:-

Most of the businesses when make certain changes they normally publish a press release about it. You can go to PRWeb.com and search for a “keyword+rebrand” to findout if any company in your category has made changes to its brand.

For example “business rebrand”

Rebrand Backlink Technique

As you can see a company named “RunE2E” has rebranded its name with “Run Consultants”. Now you can get its old domain and can start finding the sources linked to the old name.

This way you can contact all the bloggers and website owners to update the link with another similar one (yours). Although it is not guaranteed that all the bloggers will respond to your email and update the link with yours but if you get 2 or 3 links out of 100 requests then that is still a big achievement for you.

You can also use Google News Search to find businesses that have announced rebrands. Access Google News here:- http://news.google.com/

And enter keywords like “rebranded as” , keyword+rebrand etc…

Method 2:-

Sometime a website may remove certain features. For example Google removed Google Reader, Wave and Buzz.  Instead of removing the website or page where the feature was previously available, website owners normally add a “service no longer available” page.

Since these services were popular at its time and were linked by several websites you can get natural and high quality backlinks from the source pages where it is linked.

In order to find similar pages search the following keywords in Google.

  • “service not available”
  • “this website is no longer updated”
  • “page no longer exists”
  • “no longer available”
  • “this page is no longer updated”
  • “service no longer available”
  • “website closed”

Make sure to add quotes around the keywords. This will make sure to return the exact pages where they keywords are mentioned.

Here is example of a page found by searching the keyword “this website is no longer updated”.

No Longer Available Backlink Technique

Now that you have a domain that is no longer updated and you have got a similar feature, you can enter the domain in MajesticSEO.com or any other tool to grab all the sources who have linked to it. And can request the bloggers and website owners to replace the link with yours.

Note:- If you would like to know how a website, blog or page looked like in the past you can use a very handy tool “Way Back Machine” to find its old content and design. Here is the tool http://archive.org/web/web.php

3# Link to Others

Since we are taking here about the natural link building techniques, here is one another technique that you should not ignore.

When you are writing articles for your blog make sure to give links to other bloggers. This way you will not only give your readers more information about the subject but also let the other bloggers know about your blog.

As most of the bloggers keep an eye out on its link profile, you will probably get noticed if you give links to them. The more you are noticed the greater the chances to get links back from other bloggers. So make sure to give external links where it is relevant and can give more value to your readers.

4# Infographics Link Building

From the past few years infographics have emerged one of the growing trend.

This is the best way to acquire high quality super natural backlinks. According to Unbounce.com from the year 2010 to 2012 the search volume for infographics in Google.com has been increased upto 800%. Which is clearly an indication of the growth of infographics in the coming years.

As a blogger you can use infographics to build natural backlinks and traffic to your blog by creating relevant infographic. However before going into the process let me first explain what is an infographic.

As the name says “It is the way of presenting information in graphical form.”. According to the Neomam.com research 99% information is filtered out by the human brain and only 1% gets through to the brain. Infographics are in that exact 1% area because the information presented through graphics is always remembered by the human brain.

[The research by Neomam.com is presented in an infographic form. This is an example of infographic.]

Another good part is that infographics are shared on the web by the users which in returns produces free natural backlinks and traffic.

Here is the process of creating infographics and building backlinks with it;

Step 1:- The first step is to select a topic for your infographic. For example “Xbox Gaming”

Step 2:- The next step is to gather information about your topic so that it can be inserted in the infographic. For example history of xbox gaming, popular games and xbox competitors.

Step 3:- The next step is to design the inforgraphic. If you already know about Adobe Photoshop or any other painting software then you can start putting the information in the graphical format. OR you will need to hire a infograpich designer. In Fiverr.com you can hire a designer for just $5.

Step 4:- Once the infographic is ready, the final step is to share it in all the infographic submission directories. Here is the list of 100 directories.

Note:- Make sure to watermark your blog or website name of the infographic. Also add the html code for others to embed the infographic in their blogs along with your blog url.

If you want to further master the skill of inforgraphic creation then read the ultimate guide by brainzeng.com.

These are some of the useful and powerful ways to create super natural backlinks for your blog or website. Apply all the above mentioned techniques and do share your results here.
